What is a Hospitalist Physician?

Hospitalist Physicians are a specialty group of Physicians whose primary focus is the care of complicated patients in the hospital setting. They are trained in Internal or Family Medicine and have experience in many clinical areas, including:

  • Cardiology
  • Critical Care
  • Diabetes
  • Geriatric Care
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Medical Procedures
  • Nephrology
  • Oncology
  • Pain Management
  • Perioperative Care
  • Pulmonary
  • Transitions of Care
  • End-of-Life and Palliative Care

What do Hospitalists Do?

When a patient is admitted to the hospital, they may be assigned a Hospitalist Physician who will coordinate their care to make their stay more comfortable and manage a smooth transition out of the hospital. They will also manage consultations with specialists and the patient’s primary care doctor, testing, nursing concerns, family concerns, case managers, discharge planners, and palliative care needs. The Hospitalist can also provide information to the patient’s Primary Care provider to help them resume care for the patient after their hospital stay by making sure discharge medications are correct, follow-up appointments are scheduled whenever possible, and that any other needed services are in place. As always, Bayview Physicians strive to provide high quality, patient-centered healthcare.
