Dr. Evan Tomkiewicz is a board-certified physician in both Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. Evan is highly respected educator, clinician, and innovator, Dr. Tomkiewicz is known for his dynamic leadership in extracorporeal life support (ECMO), critical care ultrasonography, and medical education. His work bridges multiple specialties and disciplines, bringing cutting-edge, evidence-based practices to bedside medicine and medical training alike.
A native of upstate New York, Dr. Tomkiewicz earned dual bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Clarkson University, graduating with Great Distinction. He then attended the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, where he was widely recognized for his professionalism and leadership, receiving the UConn Dean’s Award for Professionalism and contributing significantly to curriculum reform and medical student recruitment initiatives. Following medical school, he completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Indiana University and went on to complete a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the same institution.
Dr. Tomkiewicz has developed a rich portfolio of research and innovation in critical care. He has co-authored multiple studies and case reports, including work on transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), ECMO education pathways, and rare critical illnesses such as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in lung transplant recipients. A champion of medical education, he helped pioneer an ECMO-specific training track at IU, played a central role in creating a specialized fellowship in Advanced Lung Disease and ECMO, and co-chaired the IU Critical Care Medicine Regional Updates Conference.
His professional journey also includes distinguished military service as a Major in the United States Army National Guard, where he has trained combat medics in battlefield stabilization techniques and overseen the medical readiness of deployed units.
An engaged teacher and mentor, Dr. Tomkiewicz has trained medical students, residents, advanced practice providers, and fellows in ultrasound, critical care procedures, and bedside decision-making. His passion for education extends into the community, where he has served as a volunteer physician in outreach clinics, EMS education programs, and underserved populations across Connecticut and Indiana.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Tomkiewicz is a passionate outdoorsman and lifelong learner. He finds deep joy in mountain climbing, hiking remote national parks, and snowboarding through alpine terrain. His love for exploration mirrors his professional curiosity and commitment to pushing boundaries in medicine. When not in the ICU or on a trail, Dr. Tomkiewicz is likely refining his espresso technique, experimenting with craft beverages, or testing new culinary creations in the kitchen. Whether perfecting a pour-over or planning his next summit hike, he approaches every endeavor with precision, creativity, and a sense of adventure.
