Biography

John Griffin, MD, FACC, completed his undergraduate degree at Syracuse University. He then attended medical school and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Griffin then completed his cardiovascular training at Brown University (Rhode Island Hospital).

Before moving to Hampton Roads, Dr. Griffin served four years with the U.S. Air Force working at Malcolm Grow Medical Center and Bethesda Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Since joining Cardiovascular Associates in 1986, Dr. Griffin has helped develop the cardiac catheterization laboratories and interventional cardiology programs at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. He has been the director of both programs since 1993. During that time, Dr. Griffin established a cardiovascular research program at SVBGH and has performed extensive clinical research. He has presented results of these trials at a national level and published numerous articles in peer review journals. His acute MI research was pivotal in the national acceptance of primary angioplasty and stent implantation becoming the “gold standard” therapy for the management of acute myocardial infarction patients.

Dr. Griffin performs all aspects of coronary, carotid, and peripheral angiography and interventions as well as pacemaker and defibrillator implants. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology, and interventional cardiology. He has been voted by his peers as one of Hampton Roads’ Top Docs on numerous occasions including 2012, 2013, and 2014. In his spare time, Dr. Griffin enjoys skiing, tennis, and gardening. Dr. Griffin is accepting new patients and is available for consultation and testing in our Virginia Beach Office.
